2003 RAMS
Indoor Fly-In
by David Beardsley
January
4, 2003 was the date for the second-annual Radio Aeromodelers of Seattle(RAMS)
Club indoor fly-in and swap meet. This event was held at the Tacoma Narrows
Airport in Washington state. Last year’s event was held in a large three-bay
hanger with room enough even for 60-in.-wingspan slow/park flyers.

By contrast, this year’s event was held in a much smaller single-bay hanger
that was filled with numerous obstacles. Even in the confined space of this
smaller hanger, 37+ pilots from all around the Northwest filled the hanger.
As a result, the “pits” were filled with lots of models, ranging in designs
from lightweight park flyers to small indoor models. The RAMS club hosted a
nice event.
Dan Neil was the event’s contest director. The club provided food, power for the charger, a radio impound, strict frequency control, and a channel scanner. Bud Graves monitored the pits.
The event was an excellent opportunity for pilots to exchange ideas, look at all the unique designs, enjoy the social aspect of the event, and fly fun little airplanes indoors. Studying the models, one soon realized that the super-light-weight, micro-sized indoor models have certainly evolved over the last few years. It seems that this niche of the e-flight hobby is growing rapidly. Many pilots now enjoy the unique challenges that are presented by indoor flight and other small, lightweight models. Many of the new performance gains in e-flight technology are occurring in the micro flight arena. Not surprisingly, all of the pilots who attended this one-day event had a great time. Pilots are already looking forward to next year’s event. Let’s let the pictures tell the story
